Happy crowds at races

11 Nov, 2009 02:14 PM
The annual Australian Cotton Cup race meeting was held on Saturday in pleasant conditions with the crowd building into the thousands as the day progressed.

The cool and overcast weather kept racegoers comfortable although variable winds throughout the day unsettled some of the runners with a few riders finding themselves on the ground.

Racing kicked off at 11am with a small field going around in the 1000 metre Town and Country Benchmark 65 handicap and Michael Hackett booting home the Sharon Jeffries trained grey Platinum Skye by two lengths from Chief Chargingbear ridden by Greg Ryan. Third runner Different Drummer finished well back.

A bigger field in the second of the day sponsored by Rabobank saw a win by Missenden in class record time of 1:23:85, with Sanglia second by a long neck and Hula Royale three-quarters of a length away third.

Fettlers Boot with Michael Travers on board romped home by three lengths from Old Gold after setting the pace in the Chesterfield Maiden Handicap, with Sapphiregaze filling the other minor placing.

Kacie Chater escaped injury when dumped by Belle Lee Rose who followed the field home riderless.

The Ray White Rural provided a blanket finish with Sprintcar ridden by NSW amateur boxing champion/ jockey David Pisani finishing over the top of Associate by a nose with Come On Hun only half a neck away third.

Happy Henry was in a hurry to get to the barrier and dumped Tiffany Jeffries on the way out, but after a vet check lined-up for the 1600 metre Western Farm Machinery event.

After settling back early he won easily by three and a quarter lengths from Prinsipe and Mr Resilient.

Michael Travers continued to enjoy the day with Rylstone gelding Hibah nosing out Plum Crazy in the Twynam Benchmark 50 Handicap with Playing Jingles a length away third.

Travers proved it was no fluke taking out the feature event of the day, the Auscott Australian Cotton Cup on the Tracey Bartley trained Slick Sniper by three and three quarter lengths from Steal the Thunder ridden by Greg Ryan.

A Magic Pick was a further three lengths away third.

Slick Sniper covered the 1600 metres in track record time of 1:34:5 to take out the $12,000 cup just minutes after his brother Snipers Bullet earned a cool $25,000 by running fifth in the $1,000,000 Group 1 Emirates Stakes at Flemington over the same distance.

With the local racing over, the crowd gathered for the popular Queensland Cotton Fashion parade and the announcement of the winners of the Macquarie Cotton Growers Fashions on the Field competition.

Little Black Dress, Classic Glamour, Just Beautiful and Myer fashion labels were presented at their best by the glamorous models, who were cheered on by an appreciative crowd. Cathy Beach’s Beads of Paradise accessorised the beautiful outfits.

The judges had to choose from a glut of high fashion in the four Fashions on the Field categories, with $500 in prizes handed out.

Winners were Peter Brooks, Kaitlyn Warner, Steph Gibson and Sophie Davies.

Sponsors included Weigela Design, Style Magazine, Andersons Pharmacy, Nangar Gems and Fiona Schofield Millinery.

Two pink-haired girls also made a Deal or No Deal appearance with the audience also giving the men’s fashions the thumbs up.

The festivities continued at 6pm with the girls scurrying to change into more comfortable footwear to dance to the Poly Pipes, although there were a few early sunburn and overindulgence casualties.

Police were out in force over the weekend with Darling River Local Area Command Detective Inspector Franz Maranesi saying from a policing perspective, it was a “great day” with a generally well-behaved crowd.

“There were some minor problems with intoxication and these incidents will be followed up by local police,” he said. “Overall we were satisfied with the race meeting.”

Detective inspector Maranesi said there was one high range PCA on Friday evening in the lead-up to the event and two drivers were booked for mid range PCA on Sunday morning.

He said there were also numerous traffic breaches over the weekend in and around the Warren area and numerous move on directions by police on the streets with a vigilant watch throughout and after the race meet.

Warren Jockey Club secretary

and treasurer Michele Martin said the police “did a great job and provided fantastic support” and security was good.

“I’m really happy with the day, the fashion parade was a highlight and the band was also very good.

“Thank you to sponsors and everyone that helped out in any way on the day, with particular thanks to Emma Rice and the Warren Central School hospitality students.”
