A lone seagull was an unusual visitor to the central business district on Friday.
The seagull walked about the footpath in Burton Street and when some children got a little too close he hopped halfway across the pedestrian crossing onto the centre aisle but didn’t seem too perturbed by the traffic passing on either side.
The bird eventually crossed to the other footpath and ate some proffered breadcrumbs and didn’t seem in a hurry to leave. The seagull did not appear to be injured.
Wildlife carer Gil Hogendyk said although seagulls would fly to inland lakes it was very unusual for a bird to land on the street of an inland town but the seagull may have been simply stopping for a rest.
The seagull eventually took flight and continued on its way.
