Celebrate with Senter

30 Jan, 2012 09:24 AM
Footy fans are in for a treat with Australian former professional footballer Darren Senter named as Warren’s 2012 Australia Day ambassador.

Mr Senter played for the Canterbury Bulldogs, Balmain Tigers and Wests Tigers; primarily in the hooker position. He joined Canterbury in 1991 as a lock forward, became a regular member of the under 21 team and played in the premiership winning side against Parramatta. In 1992 he progressed through the grades to play first grade against Easts Roosters when Andrew Patmore was injured, became a regular first grade replacement and finished the season in the starting line up. He continued as a regular first grade replacement in 1993 and played in the preliminary final against Brisbane.

In 1994 Mr Senter became a regular member of the reserve grade team and played in the semi-final against St George as a replacement. In 1995 he joined Balmain to play 100 games from 1995 to 1999. In 2000 he joined the Wests Tigers to become the inaugural captain. He captained the Tigers from 1999 until 2004. He played 96 games for the Wests Tigers before retiring at the end of 2004.

Preparations are in hand for Australia Day celebrations at the Sporting and Cultural Centre with organisers hoping for a big turnout. Festivities kick off with a free barbecue breakfast from 8.30am, before the start of the official ceremony and awards presentation at 9.45am. A special citizenship ceremony for long term resident Thelma Healy will round out the celebrations.

Warren Shire Council Australia Day co-organiser Darren Arthur said there had been a positive response to the awards with twenty individuals and organisations nominated over eight categories. Award recipients are judged on merit by three judges who are independent of council.

“We’re very happy with the amount of nominations compared to previous years and hope everyone enjoys the day,” said Mr Arthur.

Award nominees for Citizen of the Year are Jane Russ, Judy Ridley and Theodora Murphy, while William Fuller, Cameron Fuller and Dale Lomas are vying for Young Citizen of the Year. Community Services received strong nominations with Judy Ridley, Katie Sinclair, Jacqui Lomas, the Hospital Auxiliary and Historical Society all listed. Young Achiever of the Year nominees are Tessa Van Lubeck, William Fuller and Cameron Fuller. In the sports category Sportsperson of the Year nominees are Maria Quigley and Jenny Quigley and for Young Sportsperson of the Year Daniel Stanley and Stephanie Moors.

No surprises for Community Event of the Year with the Sesquicentenary Spring Debutante Ball, 150 Year Celebrations and Back to Warren Gala Day all standouts.

In the final category Business House of the Year nominations are Brads Wear and Warren Shire Council.
