Fox baiting group meetings will take place across the Central West Livestock Health and Pest Authority area this autumn.
Coonamble LHPA ranger Angie Kelly said autumn is a great time to bait foxes as a group as it targets young foxes during their dispersal period.
“Baiting at this time clears out any foxes that have migrated into your area over the summer/ early autumn period. If this is followed up with a winter baiting program which targets breeding vixens prior to giving birth the result is a dramatic year round reduction in fox numbers.
“Long-running fox baiting groups in the area have achieved an 85 per cent reduction in fox numbers year round with autumn/winter baiting program compared to non-baiting areas, and DII research in these areas have shown an increase of up to 20 per cent in lambing percentages.
“The other advantage of baiting with neighbouring landholders is that you are not poisoning your neighbours’ foxes, which means you use less baits. Baiting programs are shorter compared to baiting on your own and also mean less risk to dogs.”
