Local Home-Start volunteers travelled to Newcastle last year to participate in a one-day parenting workshop and attend the annual two-day National Home-Start Volunteer Conference.
Volunteers enjoyed the workshop and listening to different speakers covering topics of sleep and settle, child bedroom décor, wrapping baby, the art of reading to children and the importance of play. At the conference everyone enjoyed the presentations by special guests from Denmark Lone Moller and Annelise Dalsgaard.
Ms Moller told the group a very exciting story about the ‘Secret Millionaire’ who came to volunteer for Home-Start and gave them a very generous donation.
Ms Dalsgaard’s presentation ‘Children in Modern Society’, described how childhood is under constant change and she provided new perspectives on traditional child and developmental psychology. Another standout and memorable learning opportunity was the Tuckandee workshop presented by Tex Skuthorpe (a Goodooga man) and Anne Morrill. The Tuckandee workshops are unique in the world and the presenters have an ability to link the profound knowledge of the Aboriginal culture to the leadership issues of today.
The volunteers enjoyed all training sessions and activities of the conference, the opportunity to hear about other schemes and to meet and share experiences with other volunteers.
Volunteers said information gained will assist them in their support to families they visit.
