Local woman Jeanie Quigley was terrified when two men attempted to break into her Thornton Avenue home on Saturday January 23, but what she found more shocking was that police failed to respond to her calls for help.
Police have said they responded to a call regarding suspicious activity near a Thornton Avenue home and spoke to two women - neither of which was Ms Quigley.
Ms Quigley said she was home alone at 9.30pm on the night in question when she looked out her lounge room window and came face to face with two men looking back at her. Ms Quigley believed the pair had already broken into her car and a race to the front door ensued. She said she was able to beat the men to the door and lock them out.
“I was screaming like a mad woman trying to get them to leave and they ran out of my yard and down the street,” said Ms Quigley.
“Still terrified and not knowing if they would come back, I phoned my mum and told her to ring the police. Mum did and was assured the police would come around straight away.”
Ms Quigley said she stood in the lounge room looking out the window, telling herself the police would be there soon.
“One hour and forty-five minutes later and after four phone calls to the police station, still no police had arrived,” she said.
Ms Quigley said shock and fear was replaced with anger and frustration at the local police and she eventually called them back and told them “not to worry about it”.
She said the initial phone call was taken at Warren Police Station and not transferred through to Bourke as happens if local police are off duty or on another call out. A week later she had still not received any contact from local police and had not been asked to make a statement.
According to duty officer at Bourke, Detective Inspector Jason Weinstein, senior police from Darling River are sympathetic to Ms Quigley’s situation and will be meeting with her in the coming days to discuss her concerns personally.
“At the time two officers had a man in custody for offences including firearms and assault. In line with local protocols, one officer was working on the charge while the other carried out custody duties,” Inspector Weinstein said.
“About 9.40pm, one of the officers from Warren Police Station received a call from a woman calling on behalf of someone else. Based on the information the caller provided, the officer spoke to two women coming to the side of a residence in Thornton Avenue. Their details were taken and the officer returned to the station.
“A further call was received about suspicious activity near an address in Thornton Avenue that differed from the location given by the previous caller. Police responded immediately. A man wanted for an unrelated matter was arrested at the scene.”
