A small contingent of local servicemen, community members and school students gathered for Remembrance Day at the cenotaph in the park last Wednesday.
It was the 91st anniversary of the symbolic end of World War I when the armistice between Germany and the Allies was signed at Rethondes in France, marking the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front. The document was signed at 5am to come into effect six hours later at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month and it represented the complete capitulation of Germany.
Two days beforehand on November 9, Kaiser Wilhelm II had been forced to abdicate and the Germans knew defeat was inevitable.
In the 91 years since November 1, it has come to symbolise not only the end of World War I but also the end of World War II and the desire for an end to all wars.
