Landholder Archie Kennedy has urged other farmers to “lock the gate” to prevent coal seam gas companies from getting a foothold in the district.
Mr Kennedy made a presentation to Warren Shire Councillors at last week’s monthly meeting, saying a lack of awareness of rights may make farmers vulnerable to pressure to sell their land.
“Gunnedah is hot at the moment so they might try to come in under the radar,” said Mr Kennedy, adding once companies have their foot in the door they “spread like cancer”.
“The Government’s broke and open for business. We need to get awareness going that if someone suspicious is walking around, don’t let them in.”
Mr Kennedy urges farmers to purchase signs to prevent strangers from illegally entering their land.
Barwon MP Kevin Humphries said problems in NSW had been caused by the previous Government and there was a lack of awareness of how things were operating now with Part 3A of the Act canned and dollars for deals gone.
“We’re not going to trade off the agricultural industry; what is appropriate on the Liverpool Plains is not appropriate down our way; it is a different dynamic,” Mr Humphries said.
