Sale of rams continue to benefit district

Sale of rams continue to benefit district

14 Oct, 2009 02:47 PM
With the annual ram-selling season well under way it is pleasing to note good clearances and satisfactory prices are being obtained at the local on-property sales.

This is happening despite sheep numbers throughout Australia being at their lowest for 100 years. It also demonstrates the very prominent place Warren district Merino studs occupy in the wool industry.

Wool growers from as far away as other states come each year to Warren to make their ram selections and either purchase at the on-property sales or privately with good flow-on consequences throughout our community.

Although the sheep industry may never achieve the dominance it once held in our area, the excellent returns being achieved by lamb producers over recent years have focused attention back on to the Merino ewe as a productive and versatile animal.

All sheep producers are reminded that Australian Wool Innovation is currently holding a poll to determine the extent of the levy collected on the gross proceeds of all wool sold for funding innovation, marketing, on- farm research and development as well as off-farm R&D, with the poll to close on Friday November 6.
