Owen named FWAS athlete of month

11 Feb, 2010 09:37 AM
Sixteen-year-old shooter Jason Owen from Trangie has been named the Far West Academy of Sport Athlete of the month for January.

Jason, a Warren Gun Club member, had a fantastic January. He attended the Hunter Academy of Sport Clay Target Development camp where he was able to work with current Australian junior coach Graham Boyd. Jason then travelled to Tasmania to compete in the Tasmanian State DTL (down the line) Carnival, from January 22-25. At the meet Jason won the 50T State SB and DB titles. Jason also tested his ability in the Open men’s division, competing against some of the best shooters in Australia, where he placed sixth.

The FWAS is proud to continue the Athlete of the Month Award in 2010. FWAS development officer Matthew Thompson said the award would be conferred to an FWAS athlete each month until the annual FWAS presentations in November where the Athlete of the Year would be announced.

“With the FWAS now having over 120 scholarship holders across seven different programs, the award is a great way to recognise the outstanding achievements of our athletes,” Mr Thompson said.

In other FWAS news, the rugby league and netball squads kicked off their training in Warren on the weekend. At the conclusion of the training day, 10 rugby league athletes were selected to play against the Newcastle Knights Chargers (U16s) on February 13 in Cessnock. The 10 FWAS players will be joined by 10 players from the U16 Group XI side.

Both the rugby league and netball squads will be back in Warren for a two-day training camp on March 6 and 7.

Rugby league players selected for Cessnock include Macauley Dawson, Jim Delboux and Khaleb Whitehurst (Cobar), James White, Josh Sibbald, Adam Standford and Luke Healey (Nyngan), Jacob McKenna (Bourke), Dylan Hately (Lake Cargelligo) and Brent Richards (Walgett).
