Round nine of the ABC Shield competition saw cricketers take to the field in warm conditions on Saturday.
On a day when only “mad dogs and Englishmen” would be outside, Curban maintained their position on top of the ladder with a convincing win over Biddon Toora, while Town Services kept their second position on the competition table with an easy win over Gular. Coonamble read the weather forecast prior to the weekend and had let USC know that it was going to be too hot.
Despite the heat, some great performances with the bat and ball were produced.
The Gilgandra Bowling Club best performances included Andrew Newstead (Curban) 72 not out, David Johnson (Town Services) 61, Jaimie Zell (Biddon-Toora) 51 and Brad Freeth (Curban) 48. Best of the bowlers were Randall Medd (Town Services) 5/14, with four wicket hauls to Curban duo, Andrew Newstead with 4/9 and Scott Chandler 4/12. Brandon Hammond from Gular took 3/20.
In other cricket news, an U19 Gilgandra side took on Narromine at McGrane Oval on Sunday.
With Gilgandra not having a Brewery Shield team this season, it was great to see the young cricketers organise this “friendly” representative game.
In an extremely close game, Gilgandra managed to beat the visitors with good performances put in by Jarred Couley, Wes Lummis and Brandon Hammond.
Congratulations fellas.
In reference to a question asked in regards to short-pitched bowling, please see the GDCA Associations rules below:
Condition 16 - A bowler shall be allowed to bowl one fast, short-pitched delivery per batsman per over.
This is defined as a ball which, after pitching, passes or would have passed above shoulder height of the batsman standing upright in their normal batting position at the crease but not clearly above their head.
If the delivery clearly passes above head high, it will be called a no-ball and will count as the one allowable short-pitched delivery for that over.
Condition 17- In the event of the bowler bowling more than one fast, short-pitched delivery as previously defined, the umpire will call no-ball and caution the bowler.
The umpire will then inform the captain of the fielding team, the batsman and the other umpire of the caution.
If there is a second instance of the bowler contravening rule 16 above, the umpire will again call no-ball and inform the bowler, captain, batsman and other umpire that it will be the bowler’s final caution and a repeat of the offence will result in the bowler being banned from bowling any further in the match.
Round 10 of the ABC Shield will see both Curban and Biddon Toora trek north with Biddon Toora playing Coonamble in a must win game if they are to have any chance of making the finals.
Curban travels to Gular with the home side not having recorded a win since beating Curban way back on November 21.
In the final game, which should be the match of the round, USC will be looking to get back in the winner’s circle as they take on a red hot Town Services team on McGrane.
Everyone is reminded that the seven-a-side is only one month away, scheduled for Saturday February 27.
There should be once again plenty of prize money offered so start thinking about organising your team for this event.
