Fowler too strong in golf event

Wednesday was an 18-hole stroke, sixth-round LGU and September medal and it was good to see 17 golfers turn out.

Congratulations to the winners Ruby Fowler 70 and Daphne Calvert who was second on 71 from Kaye Martin following a countback. Marg Kentwell was nearest the pin on the 18th.

In a big weekend of golf 36 players turned out for the Ladies Open on Saturday with 67 on the greens for the Open Day on Sunday.

Congratulations to all the winners and runners-up and best of luck to the girls who will play in the finals at Wellington. Congratulations to Sumi Boyd who had a very good round on Sunday and broke her handicap.

Penny Russ-Smith was A grade 27-hole winner with Kaye Martin runner- up. Dallas Wilson won the 27-hole handicap and Sue Burke took home the runners-up prize. A grade 18-hole scratch went to Deb Kentwell and handicap winner was Lisa Whalan, while in the nine-hole event the winners were Jo Searle and Barb Laws.

In the B grade Pam Sekora won the 27-hole scratch with Robyn Downey runner-up and in the handicap Helen Kember was the winner with Shirley Ferrier runner-up.

The 18-hole prizes went to Angela Fryer (scratch) and Daphne Calvert (handicap), while in the nine-hole event Val Soulsby and Thelma Bliss were the winners.

Sumi Boyd won the C grade 27-hole scratch event and Pauline Pallier was runner-up while in the handicap visitors Yolanda Taylor and Joan Beazley took the prizes. Joan Robey won the 18-hole scratch and Lorna Wood the handicap. The nine-hole scratch went to Di Simmons and Ainslie Schreb. Nearest the pin grade winners were Pam Goldsmith, Judy Finucan and Joan Robey and longest drives went to Lisa Whalan, Elsie Lefebvre and Robin Morton.

Teams winners were team three of Sumi Boyd, Dallas Wilson and Daphne Calvert. Dallas was also the Veteran’s trophy winner from Helen Kember in a countback. Sumi Boyd won the Grandmother’s Trophy and the Sumi Boyd Trophy for a player over 27 holes who had not won a trophy went to Rhonda Darcy. The Sue Beach Memorial Trophy for a local player went to Sumi Boyd.

Today is a 4BBB stableford event with a draw for partners.

Saturday is the Sumi Boyd-sponsored 18-hole stroke and September medal and the annual general meeting is on Sunday. Next Wednesday is the Warren IGA Trophy day American Foursomes Mixed Invitation.
