Far West Academy of Sport athletes Jeb Bishop from Cobar, Bradley Connelly from Warren and Matt Egan from Cobar (now in Dubbo) travelled to Sydney recently to participate in the Western Junior Golf Charity Day at St Michael’s Golf Club.
Golf professional Eddie Emerson, in conjunction with the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation, established the fundraising event in 2006 at his home club St Michael’s. The funds raised from the golf day are used to support the development of junior golfers in western NSW.
The event attracted over 140 city business identities. While the final total is not yet confirmed, it is estimated that approximately $30,000 was raised.
FWAS golf scholarship holders attended the day as ambassadors for western NSW junior golf.
Matt Egan was honoured on the day by playing a round with Jack Newton, along with major sponsor Andrew McKenzie from AGM Corporate Events.
Jeb Bishop and Bradley Connelly were presented with Australian Open polo shirts for the 2009 event, which will be played at the NSW Golf Club in November. The shirts are not yet for sale.
FWAS executive officer Kathy Barer was honoured to accompany the boys to Sydney.
“On behalf of the FWAS I sincerely thank everyone who participated in the day and supported the event, especially JNJGF, Jeff Wagner from St Michael’s club, his staff and of course Eddie Emerson,” said Ms Barber.
FWAS scholarship holders will benefit from the funds that will support two major activities.
In January, the squad will travel to Sydney on the Bush to City tour where they will play some of the best courses in Sydney. The funds raised will also be used to fund the two golf development camps help in Warren annually. The next camp is set for October 5 to 7.
The FWAS will select its 2010 squad from those who attend this camp. To be eligible for selection, junior golfers must reside within the far west region, be aged between 13 and 17 years in 2010, participate regularly in local club events and have an official golf handicap.
Eddie Emerson will be the head coach at the October camp while Khan Pullen, coaching director from Jack Newton Junior Golf, will be in attendance to work with the junior golfers.
For more information please contact Rhonda Connelly, junior convenor for western districts golf, via Warren Golf Club or call the FWAS office in Warren on 6847 3638.
Information and nomination forms for the camp have been sent to all secondary schools throughout the region.
